POSITION: Farming and Feedlot Supervisor LOCATION: Boekenhout (Cullinan) Reporting to: Livestock Executive
Job Purpose Responsible for the overall Feedlot, Feed Factory and Farm Management, contributing to the quality
of the product by ensuring optimal processes and procedures are applied according to the expected standards.
Reporting to: Output: Feedlot Management
Develop and implement systems and procedures to ensure optimal quality and quantity of product e.g. processing and treatment protocol, feeding regime, disease management, hygiene practices etc.
Accountable for day-to-day management of the feedlot division.
Ensure animals are fed daily at the correct frequencies and that feed is mixed according to the correct texture, mixes and mixing methods.
Ensure water cribs are filled daily with clean and fresh water.
Conduct regular inspections to ensure procedures are followed and animals are cared for.
Responsible for the effective end-to-end management of shearing, wool handling and marketing.
Ensure best practice in humane animal handling / welfare.
Accountable for effective pest control and ensure pest control procedures are in place for all times off insects and illnesses.
Inspect cribs and/or fields to determine crop maturity or condition or to detect disease or insect infestation.
Proper waste and storm water management and dust control according to the company Environmental plan and statutory regulation.
Ensure adequate water availability with sufficient reserve capacity available for unforeseen circumstances.
Responsible for regular pre- and post-mortem inspections to verify animal health status and success of feeding regime.
Oversee regular postmortems of mortalities in cooperation with consulting veterinarian.
Ensure that the correct methods are followed in order to always treat animals.
Ensure that the correct number of animals have been delivered and put in the correct sheepfold, as well as that the correct paperwork has been completed.
Ensure slaughter planning.
Feed Factory
Establish optimal feed formula in the most cost-effective manner. Ensure that the correct frequencies were followed and that feedlot is mixed according to the correct texture, mixes and mixing methods.
Develop and implement short to medium term procurement strategy to ensure all time availability of feed components at best possible prices.
Develop and implement feed dispatch procedures and schedule to ensure correct feed delivery to different pens and the frequency thereof.
Oversee that preventative maintenance on machinery, equipment and assets is done in accordance with prescribed schedule.
Ensure in time reporting of any break-down to avoid down-time.
Farm Management
Optimal management of pastures and natural grazing to ensure year-round food availability to livestock.
Responsible for day-to-day maintenance of all feedlot and farm fences and gates.
Develop and implement an effective strategy to avoid and control veldt fires.
Overall responsibility of lamb and cattle herds health and management.
Ensure adequate water availability with sufficient reserve capacity available for unforeseen circumstances.
Budget and Cost Control
Drive annual planning by compiling procurement / sales, logistics, overheads and capex budgets for relevant area, as well as strategies to achieve these to ultimately increase profit.
Set SMART KPI’s to track plans. Analyse variances and create remedial actions to achieve budget.
Weekend Planning
Ensure that weekend staff is allocated with the correct duties and responsibilities.
Ensure an instruction list is compiled and that weekend staff is aware of the responsibilities for the weekend ahead.
General administration and assistance
Plan, organize and prioritise own and team tasks.
Check medicine lists, prices, frequencies and stock levels on a timely basis.
Allocate team leaders with the correct duties to be followed through.
Provide assistance according to own level / area of competence and in accordance with company policies to the team and co-workers to ensure achievement of functional objectives.
Report all incidents after shift to prevent operation failure.
People Supervision
Supervise and control subordinate's activities to ensure daily production targets are met.
Supervise time and attendance of all subordinates.
Ensure disciplinary procedures are applied adequately.
Assure stable employee relations by managing conflict and creating a positive and performing working environment.
SHEQ
Always ensure acceptable personal hygiene of all staff.
Always manage correct use of PPE.
Process and product hygiene standards maintained at all times.
All duties are performed according to the company group Occupational Health and Safety guidelines and procedures.
Qualification details
BSc Degree / Diploma in Agriculture / Feedlot / Animals.
Experience
2 - 10 years operational experience in feedlot / animal feeding.
3 years management/supervision experience.
Working hours
Monday to Friday from 06h30 – 16h30.
The candidate must be available to work two weekends per month.
